About this activity

There is growing recognition across Australia of the importance of including consumers in all stages of the research process.

In light of this, the South Metropolitan Health Service (SMHS) is currently engaged in developing and implementing a Consumer Involvement Framework specifically for research.

This framework will support the involvement of consumers in research planning, identification of research priorities and the development and conduct of specific research projects.

Involvement is different to being a participant in research projects or clinical trials. Participation in research and clinical trials means that researchers use a person's data, biological material, and/or response to an intervention to answer a research question.

We would like to invite your thoughts on how we can involve our patients, families, carers and members of the community when we carry out research.

No previous experience with research or clinical trials is necessary to provide feedback and we also welcome feedback from people with lived experience who have been involved in research or clinical trials. All feedback is valuable, regardless of how much you know about research.

Learn more about research and clinical trials

In the South Metropolitan Health Service, research knows no limits. Our research is small and large. It can be at a ward level, across state lines, or an international collaboration.

Research includes a range of activities, from staff ideas to improving care or treatments, new ways of working in healthcare or formal clinical trials to assess new drugs or devices or compare treatments.

A clinical trial is a form of human research designed to find out the effects of an intervention on a participant/group of participants.

These interventions can include medical and surgical treatments, experimental drugs and diagnostics, biological products, medical devices, health-related service changes, health-related preventative strategies, and health-related educational interventions.

Clinical trials help us to develop new interventions that may improve health and wellbeing for all.

Consumers can be involved in research projects at many different levels

The questions that we invite you to answer are about the following ways that consumers can be involved in research.
