SMHS Compassionate Care Awards 2025

Thank you for your nominations!

Patient Experience Week 2025 was an opportunity to recognise the positive impact our staff have on patients' experiences and the lives of those around them.

This year, we received over 100 nominations for staff who were recognised for providing compassionate care to patients and families across our hospitals and community services.

These nominations show that patients and their families value the kindness, empathy and respect demonstrated in the care we deliver and recognise those that go "above and beyond" their everyday duties.

The nominations were evaluated by a panel of six people that included consumer representatives and 30 Compassionate Care Award badges were awarded to the highest scored nominees.

Nominees were presented with their certificates and badges at ceremonies across four SMHS sites.

A huge congratulations to all nominees and badge winners! You can view the nominees below and as you read their amazing nominations listen for the behaviours and actions that shine through which have left a memorable impression on those around them.

Compassionate Care Award Presentation Events

We held presentation events at Fiona Stanley Hospital, Fremantle Hospital, Rockingham General Hospital and Peel Health Campus during Patient Experience Week, 28th April - 2nd May.

The events were an opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate our staff and all that they do to deliver the care that we would expect for ourselves and our loved ones.

Hyranthi, Clinical Psychologist

Hyranthi was nominated for her work and commitment to staff care that is compassionate and respectful, empowering staff to support each other, so we can offer more person-centred care.

For Hyranthi, compassionate care means being able to walk alongside another, to think together about what they need and offer a space where they feel held.

Leanne, Midwifery Manager

Leanne was nominated for her work on the Making the Changes working group. Leanne always took on feedback, understanding the issues and working hard to find a resolution.

Leanne was described as a compassionate and caring midwife who genuinely cares about the women she looks after and the team that she leads. The consumer nomination stated, "As a consumer, I feel confident telling women they are safe at Fiona Stanley, and Leanne is the reason why."

Natasha, Clinical Nurse Educator

Natasha was nominated for her dedication to education and mentorship ensuring that all nurses, from graduates to experienced staff, feel supported, respected and empowered.

Her calming presence and unwavering support enhances both patient outcomes and the overall experiences of nurses within the department, making her a truly deserving recipient.

Tricia, Patient and Family Liaison Manager

Patricia was nominated for her unwavering commitment to person-centred care and leadership excellence. She is a passionate advocate for patients and their families, ensuring their voices are heard and their experiences drive meaningful change.

Patricia felt very humbled by the nomination. "I feel grateful for the award and recognition. I accept the nomination on behalf of my team, who exemplify compassionate care every day in their work."

Sarah, Intern

Sarah was nominated for her work as a junior doctor working in the ED, when she showed exemplary compassionate care to a patient and family during a shift. Her nomination read, "It is so hard to balance meeting the requirements of the busy environment with delivering compassionate care, and Sarah is a great example of what a junior doctor can achieve in this setting."

Stacey, Occupational Therapist

Stacey is a dedicated occupational therapist working with spinal injury patients. She demonstrates compassion, respect and is proactive in ensuring patients receive the best possible support in the community setting. Her unwavering dedication has made her an invaluable resource for those navigating the challenges of spinal cord injuries, and her advocacy ensures that no patient is left behind.

Kate, Enrolled Nurse

Kate was nominated for her compassion toward her patients. Kate empathises with patients, seeks to understand their perspective and is non-judgemental.

Her nomination spoke of an example where Kate provided excellent person-centred care, achieving a great result for her patient.

Deanne, Occupational Therapist

Deanne was nominated for going above and beyond in supporting colleagues and patients with her compassionate care.

Deanne stated, "It is so important that we show kindness and compassion to each other. It is the difference between a good patient experience and a great one."

Lisa, Allied Health Assistant

Lisa was nominated for consistently going above and beyond for all her clients and demonstrating person-centred care.

Her nomination spoke of an example where Lisa supported a vulnerable patient in the community to access care and ensure they received the vital care they needed.

Lynda, Welfare Officer

Lynda was nominated for the compassionate care she demonstrates every day. Working with an extremely vulnerable cohort of clients, she treats all her clients with compassion, respect and dignity, working tirelessly to advocate for them.

Feedback from a family member read, "The level of care and support they gave my brother surpasses anything I have seen. I believe they have given him a new chance at life."

Nikola, Care Navigator

Nikola was nominated for her person-centred care, placing the person and their support network at the heart of everything she does.

Her team commend her skills, experience and compassionate, considered approach in supporting each patient and family, and the team she works with.

Robin, Consultant

Robin was nominated for the respect and compassion he treats both patients and staff with.

Robin's nomination spoke of an example where he supported a patient and allied health team managing a vulnerable patient in the community, enabling the patient to stay at home safely and with support.

Catherine, Registered Nurse

Catherine was nominated for her value in care in everything she does, including her unwavering focus on our patient's best interest while considering staff needs. She is consistently fair and equitable in her interactions and upholds the value of respect. Her calm and caring attitude gives people confidence they are in safe hands.

Diane, Patient Support Assistant

Diane was nominated for her proactive approach in improving the patient experience for our older and cognitively impaired patients,

Diane considered strategies to make resources accessible for staff. She talked and listened to patients, driving an initiative to provide a single use activity item to patients to enhance mood and cognitive condition.

Erica, Manager Health Information Management

Erica was nominated for her compassionate leadership, ensuring both patients and staff receive the highest level of care and support.

Ercia consistently goes above and beyond to ensure patients feel valued and respected, advocating for their needs and well-being.

Jayeden, Aboriginal Health Liaison Officer

Jayeden’s vision to create a culturally safe space for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and their families across PHC and SMHS is evident in all his interactions with staff, patients, and visitors. Jayeden reduces barriers to care by assisting patients and their families navigate the hospital and understand information and processes.

Jayeden’s willingness to act has made him a leader in his field of expertise and he is an advocate for dignity, care, and respect of our patients and their families.

Letty, Nurse Unit Manager

Letty has a true passion for partnering with patients. She strives to find time to speak to patients to search for what matters to them. From day one, she explains processes, care procedures and is always transparent in her work. Her drive to ensure the ‘What matters to you?’ initiative is consistently adhered to in her unit has been a key factor in the very high patient satisfaction levels reported from the Surgical Short stay unit.

Letty felt deeply honoured and humbled to be nominated for the award. She said, "It is incredibly meaningful to be recognised for something I truly value - supporting others with empathy and kindness"

Lyn, Registered Nurse

Lyn was nominated for her care and professionalism when caring for patients. Her nomination read, "She was thorough and caring when I was admitted, and she greeted me with care and respect. She is friendly, easy to communicate with and explained everything in plain english. Respect and excellence in her work was obvious. Nothing was too much trouble for her plus she knew her job inside and out. Thank you, Lyn, for your wonderful care you are an asset to Peel Health Campus."

Sanj, Registered Nurse

Sanj was nominated for the care he provided to a patient and family during their stay in intensive care. The nomination read, "He has comforted us. Early on in Dad’s stay when he was getting depressed, Sanj took the time to start conversations with Dad about travel and hobbies really cheering him up. He has constantly checked on our wellbeing as well as Dad’s. This has been the hardest thing we have ever gone through as a family and Sanj has made it that bit easier."

Sanj was grateful for the nomination and said that he appreciated his colleagues who have taught him along the way.

Sanjana, Medical Oncologist

Sanjana was nominated for her passion and dedication in improving quality of life for vulnerable patients. She is absolutely relentless in her pursuit of the best possible care for her patients each and every day. She puts her heart and soul into every patient interaction but is equally kind, thoughtful and grateful to each and every member of staff in her team. Her dedication to compassionate care is to be commended.

Lee, Social Worker

Lee's ethos is person-centred, trauma informed, and recovery focused support for the client and their nominated support persons. Lee was nominated for demonstrating compassionate care at each interaction by actively listening, reflecting, and evaluating client needs, goals, and options of support. Lee regularly supports staff to reflect and review intentions of actions, to ensure excellent healthcare provision is achieved. Lee's nominated stated, "She is what it means to be a leader in mental health. She is a change maker."

Nancy, Care Support Coordinator

Nancy was nominated for embodying compassionate care with exceptional kindness, respect and dignity in her care. She fosters positive and meaningful experiences for carers, patients, and colleagues alike.

Nancy is a true team player and an invaluable resource to her colleagues. She embodies the highest standards of care, and her impact on the lives of those she supports is immeasurable.

Sarah, Nurse Educator

Sarah consistently demonstrates exceptional compassionate care. Her nomination spoke of an example where Sarah supported staff in caring for a patient. Role modelling to junior staff on the floor the importance of engagement. Sarah’s dedication to compassionate care and her ability to create a positive experience for her patients exemplify the qualities of an outstanding healthcare professional. Her actions not only improved the patient’s mental health and wellbeing but also their physical health, showcasing her commitment to holistic patient care.
